Tartu In Your Pocket: Summer/Autumn 2009

If you’re holding this guide in your hands, it means that you probably have an interest in Tartu, otherwise known as “The City of Good Thoughts”. Tartu, or Dorpat as it was once called, is Estonia’s second largest city in terms of population but largest when it comes to ideas - it was here that both independence movements were initiated, and it’s thanks to a Tartu student organisation that Estonia now has its tricolour flag; Tartu is also the birthplace of the mighty Song Festival, which moved the hearts of women and men and stopped an army.

The Song Festival, although now held in Tallinn, celebrates its 140th birthday this year and to commemorate this important event, we’ve come up with a special festival feature that you can find on here. Tartu will also come alive with the sound of music on June 13 when a celebratory ‘Song Festival’ is held at the festival grounds. You can find more details about this fantastic happening in the Culture section (p.10).

We’ve also come up with a pretty excellent list of other events to keep you occupied while enjoying your stay in this delightful city, and as usual we give you the complete low-down on where to eat and how to spend your nights in this university town.

So go ahead, put Tartu in your pocket, grab a friend or even a complete stranger and hit the town armed with the knowledge that as long as you have this handy guide, you probably won’t get lost and you certainly won’t get bored.

As always, please feel free to let us know if you have any suggestions or comments that might make our guide even better than it is. Please send your comments to nsi(at)inyourpocket.com.

Your input helps us to be at our best.

Thanks, and happy journeys.
